Our Purpose

Whether searching for an eco-friendly gift, browsing the latest styles in organic clothing, comparing recycled products for the home, or reaching for another cup of fair trade coffee, informed consumers recognize that there is now a "green" alternative for nearly everything they purchase.  Changing our habits to help the environment is no longer just about energy efficient light bulbs, solar panels, or hybrid cars.

WeBuyItGreen is a place where people can find green products or services and share information about green living.  We are different from most directories in that our green businesses and nonprofits are allowed to list green products and services on this site free of charge.  Also, our businesses list green products and services within a green forum, where you can ask them questions about their products and how they are contributing to a sustainable environment.

How to Choose a Green Product

"Will it be better for the environment if I buy a new hybrid or stick with my old car as long as possible?"

"Does the mercury in compact fluorescent bulbs create more damage to the environment than the benefit gained from the energy they conserve?"

"I’ve heard some people say that bamboo clothing is good for the environment, but others say that it isn’t because of the chemicals used to produce it? Who is right?"

Although many consumers have now decided that they want to go green, they are finding that it can be complicated. Here a few steps that can help you to make the right choice.

  • Look for customer service: You need to be able to talk to merchants in order to evaluate just how green their products are and why. We have our merchants post their listings on a green forum so that you don’t have to sacrifice customer service when you shop online. You can not only ask them questions about their products, but also read what other consumers have to say. Moreover, we provide advice about questions you can ask merchants in order to identify the products that are best for the environment.
  • Compare green merchants and products: In order to choose the greenest products, you need to be able to compare them. One merchant may promote a recyclable product, but the next may add that they buy only from energy-efficient suppliers. Just as comparison shopping is good for picking the product that is best for you, it is good for picking the product that is best for the environment.
  • Find reliable resources to help you: Most consumers don’t have a lot of time to do research, so we are doing the research and providing resources for you. Check the Greenwashing category on our blog, where you will find reliable information on certification of green products and useful resources to help you make the best choices for the environment when you buy.

Take the Tap Water Pledge

Bottled water wastes energy, petroleum, and landfill space.  Check out the facts about bottled water on our tap water pledge page.

Fair Trade Gifts that Change the World

The next time you're shopping for a gift, why not give a story behind the gift as well?

In June, 2008, the WeBuyItGreen blog began an ongoing feature called Fair Trade Gifts that Change the World in which we help you to understand how gifts you buy can impact the particular individuals across the globe who make them.  Check it out on our blog page.  If you buy from the fair trade businesses or nonprofits you find there, your giving will be felt far beyond the single recipient of your gift.
